Match Report:

Gort na Mona 1-14 Carey Faughs 3-6

Despite a strong wind behind the visitors in the first half they couldn't take advantage fully and hit 14 wides. Carey went into the break 5 points to the good but they were to rue those missed opportunities of the first half as the home side set about slowly but surely adding scores to the board and came out 2 points to the good at the end of the match.

In very wet and windy conditions Gort na Mona were first on the board with a Christopher Devlin point following a lot of battling in the midfield area. Sean McLoughlin ruled this point out 30 seconds later. Dessie McClean converted a free and sent his next free wide a minute later whilst Carey racked up a couple of wides.

The Carey defence were withstanding a lot of Gort na Mona pressure before a cleared ball found Sean 'Chucky' McLoughlin who went straight for goal but was denied by Gort keeper Damian McNally. The Carey wides were still mounting before Sean McLoughlin sent the ball over the bar in the 15th minute to leave things all square at 2 points apiece. More Gort pressure and a wide were followed by a Dessie McClean converted free.

A James McCouaig ball accurately found Fiachra McVeigh to send between the posts and less than a minute later Sean McLoughlin added another to give Carey the lead for the first time in the game. McLoughlin added point number 4 before some Gort pressure was cleared up the field culminating in Fiachra McVeigh pulling on a loose ball and hitting the back of the net to give the visitors a 5 point lead going into the break.

Half time score: Gort na Mona 0-3 Carey Faughs 1-5

The wind died quite a bit in the second half and whatever the Gort management said at half time seemed to do the trick as Dessie McClean, who was moved into a corner forward position from midfield, added a converted point and then added a goal when Steven McGinn dropped McClean's shot and it bounced into the back of the net.

Martin McAuley stepped up to the mark just over a minute later and drilled a 21 metre free into the back of the net. However, talisman McClean was on target once more sending over 3 frees in a row and a 65' to leave things all square. A wide by each side was followed by a Gort point and then a Martin McAuley 70 metre free was dropped in and blocked on the line and cleared.

A great block down by James McCouaig found Patrick Butler who sent the ball over to leave things all square once more. Darren Boyd added a Gort point before 3 further Gort na Mona points in very quick succession extended the home side lead to 4. A Carey 21 metre free by Martin McAuley was saved and Gort replied a couple of minutes later by adding another point to the board. Carey ended the match with another great goal by Martin 'Cubby' from a 25 metre free but time was up and with only 3 scores in the second half compared to Gort na Mona's 12 there was only going to be one winner.

Full time score: Gort na Mona 1-14 Carey 3-6
