Match Report:

Carey 3-12 Gortnamona 0-14

Against the breeze in the first half Carey battled hard to go into the break 2 points to the good. Carey started to pull away in the second half and despite a Gortnamona spell of intense pressure in the latter half of this match the Carey defence held strong and the men in green ran out 7 point winners and secured a slot in the semi-finals.

Christopher Devlin opened the scoring for Gortnamona after just 15 seconds. James Black levelled things before the second minute. Approaching the third minute Cathal McAuley set up Patrick McBride who sent the ball into the back of the net. Gortnamona replied quickly with a Dessie McClean point. James Black converted a 30 metre free before adding another from play before David McNally was called into action to pull off a brilliant save when Cathal McAuley drove the ball at goal. The resulting 65' was converted against the wind by Emmet Hunter to give the men in green a 5 point advantage after 8 minutes of play.

Thomas McCaffrey added a point for Gortnamona before Paddy Butler cancelled it out. A couple of converted frees by Martin Ward started to reduce the gap and Dessie McClean resumed free taking duties with accuracy when he returned to the field after a blood injury, leaving just 2 between the sides. Patrick Butler passed the ball to John McBride for another Carey point before Dessie McClean sent another ball over the bar from a placed ball. A couple of wides from each side were followed by a great ball from James McCouaig to Patrick McBride who made a great run forward and sent the ball between the posts for another point. Dessie McClean was on target again from a free in injury time to take it back to 2 going into the break.

Half time score: Carey 1-7 Gortnamona 0-8

Once again it was Gortnamona who opened up the scoring 15 seconds after the restart. Carey replied with a James Black 65' a couple of minutes later. Each side had a wide apiece before a fantastic ball from James Black found Cathal McAuley who made a great run and blasted the back of the net.

Carey had a couple of wides before Carey found the target from a James Black free. Dessie McClean was also on target from a free a minute later. Another couple of Carey wides were followed by a converted free from sharpshooter Black.

The Gortnamona pressure began to gather momentum but the Carey defence were holding strong and clearing the pressure. Dessie McClean added a converted free before a Gortnamona sub added a further point. The post denied Dessie McClean before some more Gortnamona pressure was cleared by young Sean McBride. After weathering the Gortnamona storm Carey replied with a Sean McLoughlin point. Gortnamona replied instantly with a point. A brilliant catch from Sean McBride in the Carey square denied Gortnamona once again and he cleared the ball to Emmet Hunter whose long strike dropped in the square where Sean McLoughlin battled hard to win the ball and handpassed to John McBride for a well worked team point starting in the back line.

Substitute stalwart Martin McAuley bagged goal number 3 for the Faughs to leave 8 between the sides with just a minute left of ordinary time. Gortnamona once again upped the pressure in the dying minutes and had no choice but to drop a couple of frees into the square but the Carey defence was strong and with the final free of the match Dessie McClean just sent it over for a consolatory point.
