Carey Faughs 2-17 Gort na Mona 0-8

Carey bounced back to winning ways after last week’s setback, with a victory over a dogged and tough Gort na Mona outfit. Despite dominating most of the game the home side made “heavy weather” of securing victory on a difficult surface, but getting back on the winning trail was their main aim in this game and they will be very satisfied that they have done just that.
The Faughs made a lively start and held a 4 point lead by the end of
the first quarter, with two points from Fiahra McVeigh, three from the
brilliant James ‘Rocket Black’ and points apiece from John McBride and young Patrick Gillian, who was making his senior debut. Dessie McLean kept the Gorts on track with three pointed frees but further points from Black, Paddy Butler, Sean McLaughlin, Fiahra McVeigh and a couple from Shay Hunter gave the Faughs an eight point half time cushion (0.13 to 0.5)
The second-half started with the visitors showing that they were determined to give the Faughs a run for their money and Dessie McClean reduced the deficit to six as he knocked over two unanswered frees.
After dominating the first half the home side were struggling to find their rhythm, but a brilliant point from centre back James Mc Couaig from all of 80metre seemed to settle the men in green. The visitors were in no mood to give up the fight however and McLean tagged on another couple of frees for the Gorts to keep his side within striking distance’
The stylish Black knocked over another point, and when the same player set up Darren McGowan for a Carey goal on the 54th minute the destiny of the league points was secured. A further Butler point, followed by a goal from the Rocket himself added to the home side’s dominance and sealed the much needed win.
Despite their efforts the Turf Lodge men they had only a Darren Boyd
point from play and seven pointed frees from McLean to their credit
For Carey James McCouaig at centre half had a great hour while midfielder Caolan McCaughan covered a lot of ground, while up front Fiahra McVeigh and James Black were in fine form. Carey scorers F Mc Veigh 0.3; P Butler 0.2; P Gillian 0.1; J McBride
