Match Report:

Carey 2-8 Loughgiel 1-20

Loughgiel were just too strong for Carey and had a 7 point lead going into the break. Carey managed to drag it back to 5 but just 5 scores in each half was not enough and Loughgiel stretched away again to win by 9 and take the McCaughan Cup back to Loughgiel for the first time.

Brendan 'Chopper' McGarry opened the scoring in the first minute before Conleth McVeigh replied a minute later. Loughgiel then took control and added 3 points and a converted free, 3 of these scores coming from Conor 'Gooch' Gillan over the next 8 minutes before Martin McAuley got Carey's second of the evening. The Gooch was running riot and added another point before Loughgiel found the net courtesy of the boot of Conal 'Queenie' McMahon.

Gooch converted another free before Daniel McAllister pulled back a point for the men in green to leave 7 between the sides. McMahon added a further point before the Loughgiel keeper was forced to stop a Conleth McVeigh shot on goal but Chrissy Butler was on hand to then drive the ball into the back of the net. Fiachra McVeigh added another Carey point to leave just 4 between the sides but Loughgiel went through the gears to add 3 unanswered points. Carey ended the half strongly but were unable to capitalise as a Conleth McVeigh volley towards goal was stopped by the keeper for a 65' and Martin Cubby's resulting 65' hit the post. The Loughgiel keeper was then called into action again a minute later when he made a brilliant save to deny Martin 'Cubby' from a 21 metre free.

Half time score: Carey 1-4 Loughgiel 1-11

Carey opened the second half scoring courtesy of Fiachra McVeigh but 'Gooch' Gillan replied within 30 seconds with a converted free. Christopher Butler converted a 65' and a brilliant crossfield ball by Sean McBride found stalwart Martin McAuley for another point to leave 5 between the sides. Gillan converted another free following a wide from a placed ball and 2 further Loughgiel points were interrupted by a Martin McAuley goal when he volleyed on a ball in by Patrick McBride.

'Queenie' McMahon added another Loughgiel point but each side had a couple of wides before Leon McVeigh was called into action in the Carey net to deny Loughgiel a goal and at the other end of the pitch Martin McAuley hit the post. A 'Gooch' point was cancelled out by a Patrick McBride point but the Shamrocks ended strongly with 3 unanswered points to take the win and the cup.

Full time score: Carey 2-8 Loughgiel 1-20
